Welcome to "The How to of Managing Diabetes…A Prescription for Pharmacists", the Canadian Pharmacists Association's (CPhA) diabetes educational program and one component of the Diabetes Strategy for Pharmacists. This 10-module program is accredited by the Canadian Council on Continuing Education in Pharmacy (CCCEP) and the Ordre des pharmaciens du Québec (OPQ) for 12 Continuing Education Units (CEUs), and is designed to provide you with comprehensive tools and information that will enable you to become more involved in diabetes education, and to improve the management of diabetes among your patients.

Any pharmacist, regardless of practice setting, dealing with people with diabetes will find helpful information allowing them to provide better education and care.

The program consists of 10 modules (PDF format):

Step 1: Self-assess your diabetes knowledge

Take the free online diabetes awareness self-assessment test. This self-assessment will allow you to tailor your learning by testing your knowledge in each of the module topics. You can then choose to complete all 10 modules or complete only those topics which you find you need to review.

To take the self-assessment test, click here.

Step 2: Register and purchase the PDF program materials

The 10-modules are sold as a complete package ($100 for CPhA members; $300 for non-members). To access the training modules, you will need to register as a user of the 'CPhA Online Learning Centre (OLLC)' and purchase the program. You will be provided with a user name and password and will have access to the downloadable PDFs and additional materials in each training module.

Step 3: Read the modules and take each test to earn your CCCEP-accredited and/or OPQ-accredited Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

For each module, you must download the PDF training content before you can access the test. You must receive a passing grade on all the tests to receive a certificate of completion for the entire program.

The Diabetes Strategy for Pharmacists is an initiative designed to raise the level of awareness and knowledge of new guidelines, and provide education and tools to enable pharmacists to raise the level of care they provide to persons with diabetes, resulting in benefits for pharmacists and Canadians affected by this chronic disease. Components of the Strategy include:

Development of the Canadian Pharmacists Journal supplement on Diabetes (CP J 2009;142[SUPPL 1]), a pharmacist-specific adaptation of the Canadian Diabetes Association 2008 Clinical Guidelines for the Prevention and Management of Diabetes in Canada. The supplement provides practice guidelines and tips for pharmacists in the management and follow-up of patients with diabetes.
